My work “How Fragile” is a polyptych that grounded my interest in fragmentation within a grid
as a way to collapse time visually, where abstraction intersects with representation. I set out to
treat painting as I might a book where pages reflected left to right, and could also be turned
completely. The commute to the studio included things I would see and remember as unique,
things I would see changing day to day, and things I would meditate on. Compositions built upon
a DNA of repeated gestural marks begins without “agenda” and may result in implosive and
explosive images. Serifs function with both aesthetic and utility, and a comic book gutter—even
as a blank sliver—can convey moments or eons of time embedded within narrative. So my
pursuit of high atmospheric “storms” are immersed in personal, political, historical contexts built
from clouds of gestural marks, accumulation inventing composition.
