Momentum Gallery discovered emerging artist Samantha Bates fresh from graduate school, when the gallery opened in 2017. Bates' third solo show at Momentum features paintings, textile work, and mixed media compositions. Her artistic practice is defined by repetitious markings, using dots, dashes, loops, stitches, coils, and punched holes to represent her experiences in the wilderness. Her labor-intensive techniques result in contemporary art with unexpected uses of color. "Samantha gets engrossed in the interwoven pattern of branches and roots," Ahlers says. "The layering of embroidery and painting provides a fresh approach." Bates spent several weeks in Asheville creating two spectacular murals on the back of Momentum Gallery's building at 52 Broadway.
