Durham, North Carolina-based artist Rachel Campbell seeks to reveal beauty in the ordinary. Her oil paintings are stylized realism, depicting places and recognizable subjects manipulated through color and juxtapositions of flattened space against modeled form. She takes liberties with her palette, using punchy hues to render landscapes, home interiors, and scenes through a window that incorporates both with loose brushwork and a tropical feel. Her preferred subject matter looks for the playful side of things, perhaps viewed as mundane, and draws attention to the charm of things commonly overlooked. Originally from New Zealand, Campbell’s artwork is found in private and public collections internationally.
