David Ellsworth (1944–2025)

David Ellsworth (1944–2025) was an exceptional artist, innovator, and teacher whose influence fundamentally transformed the field of contemporary woodturning. Widely regarded as the pioneer of thin-walled hollow form turning as an art form, Ellsworth also became renowned for designing and crafting many of his own specialized turning tools, innovations that continue to shape the practice of woodturners around the world.

Ellsworth created dramatic sculptural vessels in wood for more than four decades. He began his artistic career with formal studies in architecture, sculpture, and ceramics before turning his attention to wood, where he developed a distinctive visual language that balanced technical mastery with expressive form. In the 1970s, he established the first woodworking program at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, helping to educate generations of artists and elevate woodturning within the broader conversation of contemporary art.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to American craft, Ellsworth received the Visionary Award from the Smithsonian. His work entered the collections of nearly fifty museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as numerous distinguished private collections throughout the United States.

Formerly a resident of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Ellsworth later made his home in Western North Carolina, where he continued to create, teach, and inspire fellow artists until the end of his life.
