"Dragonflies are symbols of transformation and enlightenment. Theirs is a metamorphic journey from river bottom to a river of light—a life of airborne illumination.

In this case, I was seeking illumination of an idea--the transformation of a seemingly useless piece of wood, into an object of value. This flat-sawn, natural edge slice of an Olive tree, complete with bark, was stashed at the back of my studio, waiting for “someday.” For twenty years it sat waiting. As it warped and cracked and twisted.

I followed the figure and movement of the material to preserve the organic nature of the slab. Bark remains--witness to the tree’s width.

That Olive slice has finally come into the light--light of The Gallery." – Ron Layport
