Davis Choun
Davis Choun creates a procedure to put his materials through a process which consists of burning, dying, and staining. He takes those pieces and then reassembles them on a custom-made wood panel. Dye colors are never exact and precise color consistency is hard to come by, so for Choun, letting go of the need to strictly control the process is necessary. By allowing these discrepancies a new kind of imperfect texture is created, and the wooden clothespin pieces vary in size and density just enough to influence the work on their own.
“My creative process is long and tedious, allowing for impulse and improvisation to absorb into the work. For me, the art is in this decision-making and the finished piece is evidence of those choices.”
Davis’ work has been shown throughout North Carolina and Virginia, and has work in multiple private collections including Credit Suisse USA and North Carolina State University. He currently works out of his home studio in Raleigh.
